Aspiration of knee, Hip and shoulder

Ishaan Ortho & Spine, we understand that joint pain can significantly impact your mobility and daily life. Our OPD (Outpatient Department) services offer a minimally invasive procedure called joint aspiration to diagnose and potentially treat pain in your shoulder, hip, or knee.

What is Joint Aspiration?

Joint aspiration, also known as arthrocentesis, involves inserting a needle into a joint space to withdraw fluid. This fluid can then be analyzed in a laboratory to identify the underlying cause of your pain, inflammation, or infection. In some cases, joint aspiration can also be therapeutic by removing excess fluid that may be contributing to pain and stiffness.

Conditions Diagnosed with Joint Aspiration:

  • Arthritis: This includes various types of arthritis like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, all causing inflammation and degeneration of the joint.
  • Tendinitis: Inflammation of a tendon, the tissue connecting muscle to bone.
  • Bursitis: Inflammation of a bursa, a fluid-filled sac cushioning the joint.
  • Infection: Bacterial or septic arthritis can cause joint pain, swelling, and redness.
  • Trauma: Injuries can cause bleeding into the joint space.

Benefits of Joint Aspiration at Ishaan Ortho & Spine:

  • Minimally invasive procedure: Performed on an outpatient basis with minimal discomfort.
  • Fast Diagnosis: Analysis of the joint fluid helps Dr. Subodh M Shetty accurately diagnose the cause of your pain.
  • Potential Therapeutic Effect: Removing excess fluid can alleviate pain and improve joint mobility.
  • Reduced Need for Additional Imaging: May eliminate the need for further tests like MRI scans in some cases.

What to Expect During a Joint Aspiration at Ishaan Ortho & Spine:

  1. Consultation: Dr. Shetty will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and perform a physical examination to determine if joint aspiration is the right approach for you.
  2. Preparation: The procedure is typically performed in a comfortable OPD setting. The area around the joint will be cleansed and sterilized.
  3. Anesthesia: A local anesthetic numbs the injection site for minimal discomfort.
  4. Fluid Removal: Using ultrasound guidance for precise needle placement, Dr. Shetty will insert a thin needle into the joint space and withdraw fluid.
  5. (Optional) Injection: In some cases, medication (cortisone injection) may be injected into the joint after fluid removal to reduce inflammation.
  6. Recovery: Joint aspiration is a day care procedure, and you will be monitored for a short period before being discharged home with post-procedure instructions.

Day Care Recovery After Joint Aspiration:

  • You may experience some mild soreness or discomfort at the injection site, manageable with over-the-counter pain medication.
  • Most activities can be resumed the next day, but strenuous exercise may be restricted for a short period depending on the joint aspirated.
  • Dr. Shetty will provide specific instructions regarding rest, icing, and potential physical therapy exercises.
